April 23, 2016. From research of the UMC Utrecht shows that an LVAD is a viable alternative to a heart transplant!
That is good news for all people who can be treated with a support heart.
As previously announced, people who are not eligible for a heart transplant can also get an LVAD, provided they have been positively screened for this.
In addition, there are of course also patients with end stage heart failure where implantation of an LVAD is not possible, but well be eligible for a transplant. The waiting time for these people may be shorter.
Regardless, thanks to the success of the LVAD, more and more lives are being saved!
Dr. Faiz Ramjankhan, cardio-thoracic surgeon at UMC Utrecht, who specializes in the (minimally invasive) implantation of the LVAD, provides an explanation with the NOS news.
