A Supporting Heart is the Dutch name for LVAD, a mechanical support for the heart that is implanted when the heart is no longer able to pump enough blood, end-stage heart failure. Started as “Bridge to Transplant”, bridging to heart transplantation, this treatment is being applied more and more widely. In 2015, the support heart was included in the basic package so that people who are not eligible for a heart transplant can also be helped with an LVAD.
